Take note because Katherine Langford is officially one to watch. The 20-year-old Australian actress doesn’t do things by halves, diving head first into her first proper acting role as Hannah Baker, the lead character in Netflix’s “13 Reasons Why”. Langford was accepted into the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA) in 2016 – but moved to LA to start auditioning in the general chaos of “pilot season” before she even enrolled. Though she didn’t catch a break in LA during that first visit, back home in Australia, Langford submitted an audition tape for 13 Reasons Why” and had her mind blown when she got “the call” telling her to pack her bags as she had secured the part.

With the shows heavyweight subject matter – including teen suicide – it’s a bold first move for the fresh faced Perth resident. Barely existing online (she only has 1000 twitter followers a week before the show launches) she is starry-eyed but unphased by the big time, even though you get the feeling she’s on the cusp of a life-changing moment. With the cult following behind Jay Asher’s original novel 13 Reasons Why there is no doubt that she is going to be popular.

Currently shooting her first feature film, the pro-LGBTQ Simon Vs the Homo Sapiens Agenda – you can expect to see a whole lot more of in the very near future.

This is your first foray into acting – as a previously unknown talent, who is Katherine Langford?

I was a really left of centre kid growing up. I was a national swimmer and then I wanted to be a singer and then acting came on in. I’m a Taurus [laughs]. I went to an academic selective school, like a school for the gifted, that’s where all the creativity started to reverberate. I stopped swimming and in my free periods I would go and write music on the piano in the auditorium and was part of the drama kids. After high school I thought ‘I want to give this a crack’ and it’s worked out pretty well so far.

On an unseasonably warm winter day, the Australian actress Katherine Langford is being practically bombarded by new experiences. In New York for the first time, she’s dressed in skinny jeans and a black-and-white satin bomber jacket. (“This was designed by a company called Off-White. They’re a new designer. They help Kanye West,” she offered, innocently.) In less than 24 hours, she will see snow for the first time (Hi, Niko!). And the reason for her trip is to talk about her role in the forthcoming Netflix series 13 Reasons Why, which happens to be Langford’s first major job as an actor. A less grounded young woman might be a touch overwhelmed. Continue Reading…

We added 1630 high definition screencaps from the award winning short film & awareness project, Daughter. Katherine stars as Scarlett. It was written & directed by Sarah Jayne. You can check out the link below and head to the official site, you’ll also find a link to watch it on demand.

The main themes explored in the film are violence against women and victim blaming, shown through the eyes of the three female leads as they take you through a story that explores what women deal with on a day to day basis as active members of society. The screenplay is loosely based on and inspired by the tragic murders of Jill Meagher in Brunswick and St Kilda’s own Tracy Connelly, whose occupation as a sex worker was highlighted in the media, leading to her murder and personal story being sadly overshadowed.

Katherine Langford isn’t like most twenty-year-old actresses. For one thing, her career path has been a very untraditional one to date. For another, she has only just “gone public” on Instagram. “It was a bit of a big decision for me actually, because I wanted to be an actor purely for the acting work,” Langford explains. “I have never been attracted to increasing my popularity or hireability by being on Instagram.” As the star of the popular and powerful new Netflix series 13 Reasons Why, Langford has experienced a year of firsts—her first television role, her first feature film, and now her first foray into the highly visible world of social media.

“I didn’t want to make myself a consumable product. I just wanted to be able to do my job and then disappear,” Langford says of making the leap on Instagram—where she has nonetheless quickly amassed over a million followers in about two months—although she admits that a fear of not taking “cool pictures” also played into it. Ultimately, the decision to put herself out there was inspired by fellow actress and 13 Reasons Why producer Selena Gomez. “Selena pointed out that the show is targeting young adults like me and that [social media] is a good medium to talk directly with those who relate to my character, Hannah.” Continue Reading…

Netflix’s unflinching new drama 13 Reasons Why made some major changes from its source material, Jay Asher’s 2007 novel of the same name, but one of the most significant was the ending. Whereas the novel ends with 17-year-old Clay Jensen reaching out to a fellow student he thinks may be suicidal, the series takes a different approach by leaving viewers with several cliffhangers. Executive producer Brian Yorkey has already expressed interest in returning for a second season, but fans of Asher’s book are on the fence. Sure, it would wrap up the unresolved story lines from the first season — does Alex survive his suicide attempt? — but without Hannah Baker‘s tapes, and the screen presence of magnetic newcomer Katherine Langford, the show just wouldn’t have the same emotional depth. Asher, however, wants to see more.

“I’d just like a continuation of all those characters,” the author told EW. “I’m curious as well. What happens to Clay? How do people react to what Alex did at the very end? What’s going to happen to Mr. Porter? I’d thought of a sequel at some point. I’d brainstormed it, but decided I wasn’t going to write it. So I’d love to see it.”

That’s not the only possibility Asher brainstormed: He also contemplated saving Hannah. In fact, in the book’s original ending, Hannah Baker survives her suicide attempt. Unfortunately, that’s not an approach the show can take, but it can pick up with Clay, Alex, Jessica, Justin, and Bryce (ugh) in the aftermath of the season finale.
