20th Century Fox has released the first trailer for next March’s heartbreaking/heartwarming gay teen dramedy Love, Simon. The film, based on Becky Albertalli’s book Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda, follows a gay high schooler (Nick Robinson) who develops an email romance with a fellow closeted student.

Everyone deserves a great love story. But for seventeen-year old Simon Spier it’s a little more complicated: he’s yet to tell his family or friends he’s gay and he doesn’t actually know the identity of the anonymous classmate he’s fallen for online. Resolving both issues proves hilarious, terrifying and life-changing. Directed by Greg Berlanti (Dawson’s Creek, Brothers & Sisters), written by Isaac Aptaker & Elizabeth Berger (This is Us), and based on Becky Albertalli’s acclaimed novel, LOVE, SIMON is a funny and heartfelt coming-of-age story about the thrilling ride of finding yourself and falling in love.

The John Hughes-esque film is directed by TV mega-producer Greg Berlanti (Riverdale, The Flash) and opens March 15, 2018. Watch the new footage below.

What does it take to be a rising star? When the Perth, Australia, native landed her breakout role as a bullied teen in Netflix’s 13 Reasons Why, she wasn’t even sure she could get a working U.S. visa in time. “They called me with literally 36 hours’ notice saying, ‘You’re leaving at 3 a.m. on Sunday, pack your bags,’ ” says Langford, who is currently in Northern California filming the second season of the breakout YA drama, which will feature her character in more scenes than even Langford expected. She’s also starring in Greg Berlanti’s coming-of-age film Love, Simon.

MY WORST HABIT ON SET : “Most of my set time has been on one show that is very intense. I slept a lot and was usually just very quiet.”
MOST EMBARRASSING AUDITION : “I met some producers, and we started talking about musical theater and Bob Fosse, and I stood up and did a Fosse jump.”
I’D LOVE TO HAVE STARRED IN: “A superhero movie or a musical or a Star Wars — I’m a huge Star Wars fan.”

This is a big deal. Next March, 20th Century Fox will release a big screen, John Hughes-esque romantic dramedy about teenager in love. The twist? He’s gay.

Love, Simon, based on Becky Albertalli’s 2015 YA novel Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda and directed by Greg Berlanti, follows Simon , a teenager who starts an email romance with another closeted classmate (the title is a play on how he ends his correspondences).

From the same studio and producers of The Fault in Our Stars, Simon has all the markings of a classic, mainstream teen coming-of-age flick: football games, drunken parties, school carnivals. But the romantic leads are two guys. It’s funny, sweet, sad and, ultimately, ground-breaking. EW has your first look at images from the film featuring Simon’s friends, including Spider-Man Homecoming‘s Jorge Lendeborg Jr., X-Men: Apocalypse‘s Alexandra Shipp, and 13 Reasons Why‘s Katherine Langford. Check them out in the Gallery!
